Theory Test
The Theory Test is designed to improve the safety of newly qualified drivers by making them think carefully about the right attitudes required to drive safely on today's busy roads and reduce the risk of accidents.
The Theory Test covers the following areas:
- Traffic signs.
- Traffic Regulations.
- The effects of alcohol and drugs on driver behaviour.
- The effects of fatigue on driver behaviour.
- Safety aspects of vehicles
- Environmental aspects of vehicles
The Theory Test is comprised of two parts a multiple choice question section and a hazard perception section. Both sections of the test must be passed at the same test sitting.
The Theory Test is held at your local Driving Standards Agency Theory Test Centre.
Multiple Choice Section
- The test is computer based.
- You have 57 minutes to complete the test.
- There is an optional 15-minute practise session before starting the actual test.
- There are 50 multiple choice questions.
- You need to get at least 43 questions right to pass.
Hazard Perception
- The test is computer based.
- There are 14 videos clips in the test each about a minute in length.
- The videos feature various types of hazard, such as road conditions, vehicles and pedestrians.
- There are 15 scoreable hazards in the test each scoring up to 5 points.
- The earlier you spot a hazard developing that may require the driver to take action, the higher you score.
- There are a maximum of 75 points available.
- You need to get at least 44 points to pass.
